Sleepless Nights

There was a time when I would sit
Out by the lake at night,
I'd listen to the rustling grass
And wait for morning light.
I'd listen to the chirping
Of the crickets 'round my feet,
I'd listen to my indrawn breaths,
My slow and soft heartbeat.
I'd feel the cool air on my face,
The ground against my skin,
I'd feel the calmness all around
And quiet peace within.
On sleepless nights like this I'd sit
'Til night-time turned to day,
I'd sigh, and then I'd stand,
And then I'd sadly walk away.
