Oblivion

The echoes of long forgotten children seemed to still remain in the abandoned orphanage; their elapsed presences appearing to exert an air of authority over the tranquil house. Alexandra shivered, but valiantly treaded her way along the forsaken corridors of the residence, all the while incessantly posing the same question to herself. ‘How could they make me do this?’

As she continued along her peculiar path, Alexandra was able to distinguish an almost imperceptible door. She began to scamper towards it, but as she did, a colossal beam launched itself upon her eyes. As her eyelids began their delicate plummet over her emerald pupils, Alexandra was only vaguely aware of her body’s descent towards the chilly, grime covered floor. Gradually, her mental awareness was enveloped in the soothing arms of unconsciousness.

Alexandra’s eyes unexpectedly sprang open at the reverberation of an unknown creature. Summoning up the last of her energy, Alexandra thrust her body to an upright position, swaying slightly as she struggled to gain balance. Casting fleeting looks at her unfamiliar woodland surroundings, Alexandra cringed as the unexplained noise rent the still air. At that point, pure instinct took over. With her lengthy, straight black hair trailing behind her, Alexandra began to scurry along her rutted path, repeatedly glancing behind for the mysterious being. Once again, the unknown individual began to shriek, the guttural sound echoing throughout the entire forest. With each step Alexandra took, the rasps seemed to approach at an ever increasing speed. After casting another momentary look behind her, Alexandra stumbled over an undetected fissure. With her hair cascading behind her like the water in a waterfall, Alexandra began her steady collapse to the muddy ground. Feeling her consciousness drain away, Alexandra gazed into the spiteful, crimson eyes which viciously examined her. As the monster (there was no other way to describe the thing) lifted a blood stained claw, Alexandra’s mouth launched into a noiseless bawl of terror. Then, the world was plunged in darkness.

Alexandra felt herself being roughly jolted out of unconsciousness. Slowly, she began to widen her eyes, as if afraid of what they would see. Instead, she saw herself in the same corridor, in the unchanged house. Struggling into a standing position, Alexandra once again scrutinised her surroundings. Everything was the same. Yet, Alexandra could feel a little voice in her mind, reminding her that something was different. Shrugging away the voice, Alexandra began to make her way outside, unaware of the sinister shadow lurking outside the window.
