Oasis Chapter 1, Page 1

Tyler was angry. He was furious.

The rhythmic thud of his heart was the only sound that reached his ears. The moon hung full above him. With shaking hands he pulled a revolver from inside his jacket, checked its contents, spun the chamber and with a flick of his wrist slammed a round home. This nervous habit has been obtained through countless sleepless nights standing guard, but tonight it brought him little comfort. He returned the weapon to its holster hidden within his jacket. Tyler’s anger refused to subside as he leapt from his perch atop the church spire. Landing in a neat roll he sprinted from the cemetery grounds and back into the heart of the city. The grave statues following his escape with their lifeless eyes. The sights and sounds of the city’s red light districts were overwhelming. The waves of people that slowed his run only pushed his temper higher. Unsure of where to go Tyler scaled the side of the first building he could find and took to the roof tops. Leaping down onto a second building he stopped as a scream made itself heard over the vicious thumping of his heart. Tyler skidded to a stop and looked down into the alleyway below. A large group of men had a young women backed up against the wall. With tears streaming down her face she fell to the ground and curled into a ball, it wasn’t long before one brutish man began kicking her helpless body. ‘Pick your fights, don’t be a hero’. Skye’s voice suddenly took hold of his mind. They were words that had been repeated countless times over the years but Tyler gave them little attention. Climbing down from his viewpoint down into the alleyway he crept silently behind the cluster of thugs.
“Excuse me gentlemen” Tyler said aloud as soon as he was close enough.
“Wha-“
Tyler threw a lethal elbow into the temple of the closest pseudo-gangster and before the others had time to retaliate he had dispatched three more. The glint of a handgun in the moonlight jolted his senses into overdrive. Throwing a rib-shattering side kick followed shortly by a quick combination of punches made sure he had enough room to reach the women, who had now ceased moving. As he reached out his arm to take hold of the semi-conscious women he heard a dull thump and a great pain erupted from his back. Tyler fell to the ground as his legs turned to liquid and his vision grew hazy. In his peripheral vision he noticed that more thugs had gathered around him, in his current state he was no match for them. He attempted to swallow the pain and raise his head to face his attacker but found that instead of a face he was staring down the barrel of a brand new 9mm semi-automatic pistol. Tyler felt the blood drain from his face and as both the anger and adrenaline he had previously fed off earlier were nowhere to be found he felt like an empty shell. He had read somewhere that when you die your life flashes before your eyes; he felt sudden disappointment as this did not happen; all he felt was the cold numbness take over. Tyler closed his eyes and said his last goodbyes to Skye and the others. He shouldn’t have run off like that, he realised this now. Tears formed in the corners of his eyes but he forced them back, he would not show these thugs his true feelings.

“Come on then you fuckers, make sure you aim straight and ill say g’day to Lucifer for you”
