Finalist in the 'Something With Bite 2010' competition
Desperate to awaken from the world that seems to be,
Embracing mind and body, deemed never to set you free,
Yet still you fail to comprehend the stranger striving within;
The windows to your soul relay but a memory of who you’ve been.
Every breath deprives more air; blind sighted more each wink,
Inspiration crashing, whilst you wait to watch it sink.
Friends scurry from the scene displaying but a bewildered mien,
Wiped from the memory of colleagues like any irksome routine,
Family struggle to understand as your hopes and dreams careen,
He who always had your heart, murdering the last self esteem.
Alone you fight the demons yet soon captured and enslaved,
Your carcass impassive and psyche’s passion concaved,
Expected to breathe underwater; to soar with broken wings,
Pain overwhelms all happiness; the future lacking of flings.
My only request is to breed life into my soul that’s slain;
Rekindle my passions in life and find myself again.
