Night Time Terror, Night Time Fait

Excellence Award in the 'Step Write Up 2011' competition

Stars dancing across the sky,
Overpowering the pale light of moon,
The little balls of silver light,
Come right after the peaceful noon.
A new world comes into vision,
Animals try to make a decision,
Of whether to pose a potential threat,
Or whether to starve and protect.
Flowers close for hidden safety,
As the wide-eyed owls hoot,
They gather together all their weaponry,
And set off to catch their midnight loot.
Trees rustle throughout the night,
Giving the honey birds a little fright,
Feral cats hunt down the sparrows,
Their claws like long, shiny arrows.
The stars disappear and become invisible,
As the sun rises over a hill,
Relief floods over every animal,
And the owls hide, after their midnight kill.
Begins another day of sheer terror and relief,
As every movement, there is a crunch of an autumn leaf.
For the critters and creatures that live on the land,
May not ever see another speckle of sand.
Every second that goes by,
Is carefully watched by a magpie,
Hunting worms is his specialty,
And of course, it is not a difficulty.
