We left for Egypt, each of us young and scared
We trained and trained but that was nothing for what we would face in Turkey.
The sea was red with blood when we landed. They peppered us with projectiles and bombarded us with bombs.
Our refuge was the mountains, were we dug our trench,
We advanced on our foes but they were more prepared.
Many of us were maimed and wounded and morale was low.
The troops no longer abided by the strategy and sleep in the trenches was becoming very rare indeed.
Letters to fallen comrades rubbed salt into the wounds in our hearts.
The orders to retreat was like a light from heaven
But we were mourning the entire way home.
