The dark, dusty sky,
Banishes birds of flight.
Everyone is trapped,
The bush, attacked,
By the monstrous fire.
Screams can be heard for miles,
As houses are left in piles.
People are forced to hide,
While the fire rages outside,
Along the dry, dishevelled ground.
The flames race up the trees,
The people gaze with unease.
The smell of the charred earth is like an old fire place alight,
This little country town has been hit, we are in for a fight,
From a terrifying inferno.
The hot, searing fire blisters hands,
The fire roams and kills the land.
The taste of ash in my mouth is like eating burnt toast,
The crying of children, deafening at the most,
I wish this all would come to a screeching halt.
The air is as hot as a stove,
This blazing bonfire is running where I used to rove.
Life is a rollercoaster but I have never seen anything so unrestrained,
My body is dying from the heat, I feel drained,
I should’ve gotten away.
The red sky is like a blanket of blood,
I wish the sky would let down a flood.
I hope this disastrous, devastating day will come to an end,
And for the heat to vanish around a bend,
The great Australian bush is almost dead.
