Excellence Award in the 'Write As Rain 2014' competition
As the pages turn the story unfolds
A silent scream as the day grows old
And the night brings on the fearless cold.
My heart rate picks up as the pages run
And the story begins to appear.
The dying sun solemnly signals goodnight
I persist with my reading; the words take flight
Writhing and wriggling, trapped in a cage.
The book screams "read" as it longs to be free
To enter my imagining, deep inside of me.
When words are alone, they are nothing but words
But when they're together they fly like a bird.
They soar o'er the page in a never-ending trail
The memory stored within of their engaging tale.
The power of words is like no other
Pain caused by one - yet removed by another.
The magic of books will always amaze
And while there are words the stories will stay.
