War - A Snapshot In Time

I’m curled into a ball, protecting myself from the flying rubble. Once the ringing of the explosion is gone from my ears I look up. The dust stings my eyes and makes me cough. Through the dusty, choking air I can see where my house once stood. It is now just a huge pile of rubble like so many other homes in the street. I take a few large steps forward. The hot, dry earth baked by the sun is burning my bare feet. I claw my way through the rubble screaming my parents’ names. Suddenly I reach in and feel something hot and sticky. I pull my hand away. It’s turned a deep red. I suddenly realise what’s happened.
I wipe my hands clean on my skirt. I can’t stand my legs are shaking too much. I swallow down a sob and look around at the bleak and empty landscape. There is now only one house still standing in our street and it’s deserted. I look out across the desert and see a sand storm coming. Oh no. Then I freeze. There is a sound of smashing bricks followed by the wheezing sound of someone breathing. I turn around and see my older brother. He has been fighting in the war for 10 years. He smiles at me and ruffles my hair. I hug him. That’s when he sees the house. He’s not smiling any more. He hugs me tighter and I can feel his salty tears dripping down onto my face. We break apart after what feels like eternity. He clears away the rubble. My brother drags out my parents bodies. There’s a lot of blood and their looks of sadness are frozen on their faces forever. The fire from their eyes has gone. Now there’s just emptiness. At least I have my brother. At least there’s still a ray of hope.
