A girl smiles at the camera, teeth gleaming and white
Nobody sees the girl underneath, slowly losing the fight
Her bones are angular under her skin, so this is what beauty feels like
The tiniest shadow of a fiery star, a shadow to loathe and dislike
‘Don’t worry about your looks, it’s what’s inside that matters’
These pointless refrains do nothing for her
With each day, her confidence shatters
A girl cries at her reflection, face puffy and red
‘You’re worthless, try harder’ society says as thoughts tangle up in her head
All that she knows is she wants to change, she’ll do whatever it takes
Hiding all of herself away to patch where her fortitude flakes
Over the years it eats her away, there’s nothing else that matters
Even though now she’s wasting away,
Still each day her confidence shatters
A girl sits in silence and stares at what she’s done
No-one told her it would be like this; it isn’t her that’s won
