Toast is an under-appreciated commodity
Yet enjoyed my many in their morning odyssey
It's crisp, sweetened surface crunched and scraped
Yet there has been a decided lack of respect, of late,
For the vessel for the enjoyment of butter, jam
Honey, Vegemite, cheese, marmalade and Spam,
For the most appropriate company for coffee in the morning
For the scent that rouses sleepy teens from messy beds, yawning.
Too often is toast just a food, nonchalantly chewed
As its customer flicks through the newspaper on a softly hued
Morning, unaware of the great improvement toast gives
To the breakfast experience, how it lives
Within all of us as a symbol of the break of day.
So, next time you hit the hay, think of your breakfastly host
And appreciate the promise of the toast.
