She dives off the jetty
Pearls appear where her body meets the water.
Pearls that fill her bathing suit and pull her down, down, down...
She resurfaces.
Diamonds drip from her eyes as she cries in fear.
Diamonds that scratch her face as they fall, fall, fall…
She stills the tears.
Rubies blossom from the scratches left by her distress.
Rubies that create glittering scabs as they set, set, set….
She climbs out of the lake, collapses.
The pearls are combed from her hair,
The diamond picked from her eyes,
The rubies chipped away from her skin.
The fey stroke the ivory cheek of their changeling child,
Their most precious girl,
And diamonds litter the ground.
