Dawn is pulled over mountains, like a carriage by a horse
followed by silver-backed clouds, and treacle streaks slow on course.
Light dribbles through the trees, like milk off an infant’s lip,
blurred shadows drawn upon the soil; life wakes, bit by bit.
Birds tune their morning triage; a swell of jarring notes.
Flowers burst into colour, gatherin’ rays before the heat.
Midday’s raw haze sedates, like kids’ luncheon doze,
Too soon the light will falter; shadows creep in forest rows.
Evening breeze coasts through branches, Like a sunset zephyr on a beach,
rustling up the damp leaf litter; bushland scent – bloodwood and beech.
Darkness seeps from crannies, like blood from a bandaged wound,
draining day of colour, making way for light by moon.
