Watching And Waiting

Once I had a friend. The boy who lived in the dark.
He'd creep out in the darkness, flashlight by his side.
Eyes like hurricanes, spinning out of control.
He'd walk here and there, as silent as the night.
The owls would hoot and the cats would meow,
And smiles danced like silhouettes on his freckled face.
As my feet sank with the weight of time, he'd pull me back up again.
Years passed and I watched him grow, watched him walk away, his uniform on his back.
Once I had a comrade. The man who only saw darkness.
He'd stumble out of the nightmares, walking stick by his side.
Eyes as cold as winter, lips as blue as ice.
He'd limp here and there, trembling like a fragile leaf.
The men would scream, the ground would rumble.
And tears would stream down his weary face.
And as I cracked away, he just stared, as if I was nothing to him.
Years passed and I watched him break, watched him fade away, his conscience on his back.
