Sean Sweeney, Grade 8
In the darkness walked a beast
Searching for something, amongst all the green
This wise, grand creature cared not to feast
But knew what he wanted when he had seen
A recent yet distant memory sitting deep in his withered brain
And from a towering tree he jumped!
Catching the the soft breeze that ruffled his royal mane
A glimpse he caught of rising sun, he knew what he wanted now... He thumped!
The scarred, battle-torn animal looked above
As he dashed but then roared
And flew like a dove
A jolt of pain embraced him like a tight metal cord
Sunlight shining on his golden fur in weakness and pain his old gaze tilted to the sky
As he lay in the sunrise and drew his final breath, the lion accepted that he could now die.
