War Dog

The shelling was quite vigorous, Beachy Bill quite in a rage
He wants a swig of victory or our good luck to change
Me and my master down in Gallipoli Cove
The place where we'd been drove,
There, many heroic bodies laid
For many men were falling like an Abdul grenade
Then I heard a shout
What was this hullabaloo about?
What was it I saw?
My dying master sprawled upon the floor
He grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil and did a scribble that took a while
Clipped it on to my collar and then said with a smile
The road will be a long one you'll travel without me by your side
Oh boy you've earnt my love and pride
Go back to camp, I will be there too
Though my bones will be buried my soul will be with you
