Lovely And Monkey

Excellence Award in the 'Word Zone 2016' competition

In the country of the Philippines, lay a jungle. A great green jungle with the richest soil, tall lush green bushy trees, the smell of rain, and juicy sweet fruit. On the edge of the jungle stood a small, roughly made bamboo hut. In the hut lived Lovely and her mum. They were poor with very little to eat, and only water to drink. Lovely had a friend, not a human friend, but a monkey called Monkey. They played together, and had lots of fun every day. Lovely’s mum made jewellery to sell in the markets for money. Lovely and her mum worked very hard. This paid for a small amount of rice and vegetables every day, and to send Lovely to school. However, whenever Monkey played with Lovely, he got in the way of the jewellery-making. He loved to steal the pretty coloured beads. Also, his tail got in the rice pot. Lovely’s mum sent him away and they couldn’t play anymore. Eventually, Lovely’s mum ran low on beads so this meant that she was selling fewer plastic bead jewellery at the markets than usual. In a matter of time they had no money, so Lovely was to be pulled out of school. Lovely and her mum wept, as it was the only opportunity of them having a better life. It was unfortunate, but it had to be done because buying food was the most important thing. For weeks, Lovely missed school, so much. She also missed Monkey a lot. She couldn’t believe it was all turning out like this. One night, they heard birds fly raucously out of the trees, and heavy footsteps approach the hut. “Who would be up at the middle of the night?” exclaimed Lovely. They huddled together. They heard a last footstep and they took one last breath. A head poked through the entrance of the hut. “Hello! Sorry to wake you.” It was Lovely’s old school teacher. I just wanted to come see you to tell you that the Government is running a writing competition. The prize is a scholarship that will send Lovely to school for two years! Lovely is an exceptional writer, and I think she should enter. It is a great opportunity for you both,” he said. “Lovely, if you enter and win, you could go back to school,” said Lovely’s mum excitedly. So the first thing they did in the morning was go to the Government building and asked how to enter. They both travelled home and Lovely tried to decide what to write. She wanted to write about something that makes her happy. Instantly she thought about Monkey and both of their adventures. She got the paper and pencil that the government gave her. She started writing. A few weeks later, the winner was announced: Lovely won with her story ‘Lovely and Monkey’. Lovely’s mum was so happy, Monkey was allowed to play with Lovely again, and best of all she could go back to school! The end
