The trees cast dim shadows over the river
Glassy and unbroken lay the water
A mist appears making every fish shiver
The sun comes over the hills waking nature’s daughter
Silence breaks as bird songs fill the air
Movement, as life brightens and animals awake
A hungry pelican glides by looking for his share
The mirror is broken by the bird’s wake
The wind blows, bringing jewels which glisten
Ever changing patches of the river to dancing in the sunlight
The breathing of a dolphin if you close your eyes to listen
Never have you seen such a dreamlike sight
Darkness appears swallowing every ounce of heat
Crickets sing beautiful lullabies with all their might
The river quietens as she falls asleep
Nature’s daughter glimmers with glee in the faint moonlight
To the reader: This poem is inspired by the river we live on, The Manning. My three brothers and I live on a farm on Oxley Island NSW, and every day we wake up to this magical sight.
