Identity

3rd in the 'Calling All Poets for the Poetry Competition of 2002/2003' competition

a chameleon darts under the lush emerald leaves
drinking in their beauty, as proud as they are.
listens to the chatter of crackling underbrush
recoiling at the whisper of change.
idly gossips with the wind
always shifting, always changing
how empty he must feel
only by losing himself can he fully be.

and yet his eyes.
still bright with childlike anticipation
depthless pools of awe and wonder.
eagerly they embrace the future, forgiving the past
brilliant, shimmering, reflecting a rainbow of thoughts
that dance unceasingly through his mind.
how lucky he must feel
By losing himself he is free to explore what he might become
