The moon has face like the clock in the hall,
She shines through windows on a house wall,
On stairs and pavement and harbour quays,
Birdies asleep in the forks of the trees.
The hissing cat, the sneaking fox,
The howling wolf by the big rocks,
A squeaking rat in bed at noon,
All like to hunt with the moon.
All the things that belong to the day,
Cuddle to sleep to be out of her way,
And flowers and children close their eyes,
Till in the morning the sun shall rise.
