I left my country by boat, It was lucky to stay afloat,
I watched the land shrink slowly away, I feared this would be my last day.
We were travelling to a distant land so far away,
If it was my choice I would have chosen to stay. They say it will be better
Better than home, Despite their persuasions, I continue to feel alone
Most of my family are still there, Even though I don’t know where
It was not safe for me, So I had to leave by sea
I had to leave I had no choice, I was just a child without a voice
I had to act quickly, If I stayed I would have been a slave to war
So I was forced to open a different door, I miss my culture and my community
I am no longer the girl I used to be, The friendly face of my old home town
Now invaded by war, it bears a frown.
You would dread to see what I saw
The memories will stay with me forever more
The boat carries on towards the setting sun
The light fades, until there is none
And beyond the horizon out to sea
I am promised a safer destiny.
