You cannot cage the bird,
For the life in her flying
Is rooted deep within her members
And inscribed in her soul.
You cannot cage the bird;
Shackle her, and she will jump.
Clip her wings, and she will dance.
Bind her feet, and she will sing.
Constrict her mouth, and her soul will yearn,
For you cannot cage the bird,
And neither can you cage
The instinct of freedom
That is the song emblazoned
On the gold of her heart.
