Finalist in the 'Time To Write 2018/2019' competition
Spring dawns, an hour of new birth,
Presenting the gifts of the sky and the earth,
I lay in slumber, awaiting the hour,
When I am relieved of this compressed power,
My green shoots awaken, unfurl in the breeze,
However, shadowed by my elders, the trees,
Oh, how I long to become that high!
To feel my branches clutch the sky,
Many years pass, I finally tower,
As the other plants quake at my amazing power,
It’s all I wanted, a miracle come true,
However, something inside me is filled with Rue,
Despite my wisdom, fun disappears,
As I long for the naive and undisciplined years,
And despite my longing, to become older and strong,
I should have lived in the present all along.
