Waiting

My shoes crunched on the dead leaves,
While small shoots grew underneath,
Who knew a life after death?
Silently the wind called me up in a moan,
Tombstones lined up,
Each like a flagging soldier
Waiting to be picked up and chosen for heaven.
In a queue they had to wait.
At the far end on a tombstone,
“Everly Grangers”,
My name;
I remember since that day,
I’ve been waiting,
Still waiting.
