Gifts With Ribbons

If my eyes could spill sunshine then light would kiss your coffin,
breathing life into your name etched new on a headstone
leaving the shadows to trace along the margins of your memory.
I would curtain my attempts at swallowing serenity
whilst choking on the dust of your vanishing hands.
If I could tie ribbons on mortality,
I would wrap it in oblivion and gift it to you.
I would force your memory to behave like a morning dream;
The details difficult to recall,
The emotions foggy and fading away.
If I could go back and see you once again,
If I could tell you how much you mean to me,
I would.
But I know that you would say,
Gifts with ribbons are overrated…
A hug would mean much more.
