The Miss Conception

A classroom in May is full of silence.
Reading letters of their friends with fear.
Excited by what their friends thought violence.
For nothing bad was written within the word spear.
Boys now go to the station to register for the forces.
They are welcomed to Adelaide with all open arms.
Seeing all the now bloodied stained corpses.
Knowing they have seen the last of their farms.
They now wish to get through this war without tears.
Packed on a train the letters they stow.
Drafted north towards Darwin’s piers.
The bombers begin falling all but slow.
Cries from an island apart from the natural Australian port.
As families grieve with all but those who fought.
