The Modern Frankenstein's Monster

Do you fear acid attacks, like I do?
Like the Brooklyn woman burnt on a Sunday night,
Her eyes too slanted, skin too yellow, genes too Asian,
Marred like a modern Frankenstein’s monster.
Xenophobia turned normality,
Anger spat at us kindles the fire inside,
Self-hatred burning our perception of self,
Am I a modern Frankenstein’s monster?
A second plague - viral cases of hate,
Yesterday, a lady fled, seeing me and my friend,
Two Asian girls on the post-school commute,
As if we were a modern Frankenstein’s monster.
The cure is simple:
Empathy, compassion, kindness.
These dearest treasures cost nothing.
I am not a modern Frankenstein’s monster.
