Ocean Ties

The waves of the ocean crashed gently onto the towering rocks beneath the cliff, frothy foam forming each time there was an impact. The saline odour invaded Aura’s nostrils as she gazed into the watery blue depths below. Cylinders of light moved across the sea as the sun shone with its blinding rays. The neon-blue sky seemed threaded with silver, complementing its other half on the horizon. A colony of seagulls flew in a mismatched formation and squawked every so often. This was true beauty, and she couldn’t help but capture its ethereal beauty in acrylic and oil.

Aura always loved the ocean and everything about it ever since she was young. The crashing of waves and the salty smell made her feel as if she was home. As she grew older, she knew she couldn’t come every day to watch the flowing tides, so she decided to paint it. Every week, Aura would come with a fresh canvas, ready to paint the sea over and over again. Each stroke of the paintbrush became muscle memory for her, like an extension of her body. She never got tired of painting the ocean, only sad when she finished.

Today was an especially special day, as it was the anniversary of the first time, she saw the ocean. No one was there, only her and the gushing tides. She abandoned her canvas and paints behind her to stand on the edge of the cliff. She couldn’t help but get closer, trapped by the hypnotising beauty of the waves. She took a tiny step forward and placed her foot on a protruding rock.

One moment she was standing on the cliff and the next, she was free falling onto the sharp rocks below.

‘I’m going to die!’ she thought as she plunged downwards, the air rushing against her and blowing her dirty blonde hair against her face. Aura was frozen in fear, unable to let out a scream. She closed her eyes as she got closer and closer to her end.

‘This is it then. Death by what I love most in this world,’ she pondered as she braced for pain and death. ‘Maybe that’s not so bad.’

A rock pierced through her stomach and an explosion of pain erupted from her middle. She let out a howl of agony and choked on her blood. Her body started to shut down as the pain became unbearable for her to handle.

All of a sudden, she felt the waves brush over her in a comforting cradle, pain easing ever so slightly.

‘Oh no,’ a delicate voice, like silver bells, resonated around her. ‘We cannot destroy someone who has loved us so beautifully.’ That was the last thing she heard before she fell into the void of nothingness.
