Excellence Award in the 'National Treasures 2022' competition
An awestruck face gazes at surreal painted skies,
Giggling as ferocious curls dance along her cheeks.
An overwhelming scent of jasmine fills her lungs.
Her laugh a light, enchanting melody.
Infinite fields of wildflowers blessed by her crooked smile.
Crowns of gilded blossoms infused with rebellion.
As her fingertips brush against the golden flora,
They whisper a chorus of dangerous words,
Compelling her to breathe in her death.
She takes greedy gulps of hopeless air,
Her eyes flutter as consciousness escapes her,
Surrendering to the fatal fragrance…
But they recognise the untamed beauty,
As one of their own.
Fields of honey hued petals withdraw.
Her bright eyes fly open, life is restored.
