3rd in the 'Calling All Poets 2007' competition
You stand in our front hallway, just below the stairs
Witness to our laughter, our sorrows, fears and cares
One look upon your stately face can make our legs accelerate
Much faster than a voice that calls, “hurry dears, or you’ll be late.
You’re the heartbeat of our homestead, our greeting at the door
Your paintwork needs some T.L.C especially near the floor
There’s artwork on you sides and front, its visage slightly faded
The brass work round you dial I feel is sadly kind of jaded.
You travelled here by sailing ship, powered by winds that blow
Sometimes with a mighty force and sometimes rather slow
For many years you’ve tick tocked away since first sitting on the floor
Companion in our daily lives, may you tick for many more.
