Anzac Day

3rd in the 'Believe It Or Not 2001' competition

Five o’clock in the morning driving to the hall,
People walking through town in uniform,
People big and small.
Everyone wearing poppies, just above their hearts,
Remembering the loved ones,
From which they had to part.

Silent tears, streaming people’s faces,
Thinking of the soldiers
Who died in bad, bad places,
Airforce, Navy and the Army too,
Remember the men and women who died for me and you.

These brave people looked death in the eye,
Landmines on the ground, bombs falling from the sky.
You might say, “It’s in the past, I don’t care”,
So you laugh at the poppies most people wear.
But just think, “What if I went to war?”
To fight for your Country, on some distant shore.
So this Anzac Day remember, the dangers those people met,
And remember what they told us, ‘Lest we forget’.
