pain

The floor was a mad frenzy of bodies as they danced to the music that filled the room. Marni and I started dancing together while ignoring the staring boys who surrounded us.

It was a dirty, hot night with the smell of sweet sweat in the air. Marni and I were both wearing our shortest skirts and tightest tops. It was a hot night and seeing as I was a free woman now, I deserved to dress how I felt. I could see Leigh standing in a dark corner across the room. He was still angry with me for breaking it off with him earlier that day. I knew it would be hard to see him tonight, but not this hard.

As Marni and I danced, I watched him out of the corner of my eye. After about 5 minutes on the dance floor, Leigh looked straight at me like a snake with eyes of hunger. It was the first time I had seen him look at me like this. He was full of anger and pain. I felt like I couldn’t shift my gaze off of him. It wasn’t until Jarred was standing directly in front of me that I even realised he was here tonight. Jarred, Leigh’s best friend and I had never been close even though Leigh and I had been together for over a year. He grabbed me by the shoulders and pushed me past all of my friends into the icy wind outside the clubrooms. “What the hell do you think you’re doing? Do you know what you’ve done to him?” he yelled. “You’ve fucked around with his mind for the last time. I knew he couldn’t trust you. But you’ll get what’s coming to you, I’ll make sure you do,” he growled. He shoved my body away and stormed back inside. I started to feel the hot sting of tears well in my eyes but brushed them away before they had a chance to crawl down my cheek.

As I made my way through the crowded room towards my friends I knew what I wanted and I knew how to get it. Before Marni realised I was back I turned around and headed into the far corner of the room. Jason was selling, and I needed to buy.

I was already getting tipsy from the vodka we had drunk before we arrived but the E would put me over the edge.

My head was spinning out of control. I couldn’t see clearly anymore. The room was dark with the flickering of figures dancing around me to the techno music. The drugs had worked fast. As the two-faced shadows screamed and flashed around me, I could feel someone holding me. Holding my hips tight against them. Trying to pull away and find a familiar face, I finally broke free. I ran to Marni and couldn’t explain what I was scared about. Everything started to blur. My eyes became heavy.

I woke up to the muggy summer’s rain splashing over my face. I felt the wet ground and tried to stand up. I was outside the clubrooms and no one was around. The party must have stopped. As I found my feet, I grabbed the cold streetlight for support. I knew which way I had to go to get home, but would I make it that far? The street was deserted with only one streetlight working about a kilometre away. Surrounding me were noises of the night. Whistling through the trees came cries of darkness and fear. The rain began to sting like hundreds of needles as it came down faster.

The hairs on the back of my neck started to prickle. I could sense his presence. I heard faint footsteps keep in time with my own. I fastened my pace. It wasn’t until I saw his shadow loom in front of my own and the warmth of his breath on the back of my neck that I realised he had caught me. In a split second he had had my wrists in a tight grasp and he threw me into the dark trees that lined the edge of the empty street. I lay in shock as the hooded figure came down towards me. As I realised what was about to happen, I started to scream. He held me down with his weight and held one hand over my mouth as he un-buttoned his pants. I squirmed and struggled under his bulk but realised it was no use. There was no one out here to help me. There was no hope. I let out a cry of pain…..
