Tears

It was a happy day. It was MY 6th birthday. We were driving to Darwin from Alice Springs, and you know how deserted that road is. We were going to visit my married sister, and her adorable baby boy, a real treat. We were going heaps fast, and dad, who was driving, was singing his favourite song and seeing how fast he could push the car, as there was no-one else about.

But from there things went wrong. Too wrong. All of a sudden I felt the car jerk and swerve into the dense bush at the side of the road and I knew we had lost control of the car. Then we met the trees and then.... Blackness.

When I woke, I was still in the wreck of the car. I knew without looking that my parents were dead. No-one in the front seat could have survived the impact at that speed.

I didn't know ,but I had severe internal injuries, all I knew was that I had to walk, or I would die. I remembered that I was six today and my eyes filled with tears as I also remembered the happy faces of my parents as they looked at me.

I struggled on, the best as a six-year-old could do. One step after another, each was an effort. I remembered when I had come home from hospital at age four, after recovering from cancer. I thought it had been hard to walk THEN. Compared to this, it was as easy as breathing.

But then my injured body gave in. I collapsed on the ground, and then the pain came. It was a blinding pain, as no-one had ever felt before, but then my spirit let go of the empty shell of my life. My spirit let go, and moved on.
