A GIRL JUST LIKE YOU AND ME
A girl just like you and me,
Travels down a dusty street,
Smiling to herself,
Even though she’s alone,
And she knows she can’t go home.
Finally she’s out,
She escaped from the pain a whole person,
So she smiles because she knows,
God is on her side.
The stars have blessed her young soul.
One step at a time she sees,
Where she could have been.
In the outside world,
With black roads and fancy telephones.
No more porridge and evil mistresses.
Grateful for her fortune,
She smiles that secret smile,
And I smile too.
For I know that although she has nothing,
She knows the secrets of the world.
