Tangled Webs

The sky was such a beautiful colour that night. I don’t think I have ever seen so many beautiful dancing stars. Dazzled by the beauty, I rolled up onto my toes and spun around on the spot. Everything moved and yet everything stayed still. Everything felt so wonderful! I felt as though I was flying. I was soaring through the stars. I felt so elated, as though anything was possible. Anything was possible.

“Rachel! Are you ready yet? We really have to go!”
“Shut up, Cameron! I’m coming!”
“Hurry up!”
That guy was so bloody impatient! I quickly put on some lipstick, grabbed my beautiful new handbag and dashed out of my room.

Cameron was waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs. He turned to face me as I walked down the stairs and I had the satisfaction of watching his eyes pop open briefly as he took in what I was wearing. I had scooped my shortest mini skirt and tightest boob tube out of the back of my cupboard for tonight. That paired with my sexiest knee-high boots and fish net stockings. I felt rather uncomfortable actually, I never usually dressed like this but this was a special occasion. It’s not every day that your best friend turns eighteen.

When I got to the bottom, I hugged Cameron and gave him a quick kiss before doing a small turn on the spot to show off my outfit.
“What do you think?” I asked him.
“Yeah, you look good.” he said briefly.
“You like the skirt? Are you sure it isn’t too short? I could go back up and change it...”
I turned to walk back upstairs but he held onto my arm.
“No, you look great.”
“Are you sure?”
“YES! Now can we go?”
“Haven’t you ever heard of ‘fashionably late’?”
“Amy is going to be wondering where we are.”
The mention of Amy’s name brought me back to reality.
“What are we doing standing here and talking about it? We have to go!”
“That’s what I have been... oh never mind! Let’s go.”
With that, he wrapped his arm around my shoulders and led me out the front door.

“Rachel!” Amy screamed as she saw us walk through her door.
“Amy!” I reciprocated.
We laughed as we ran towards each other and I gave her a big hug. Not to feel left out, Cameron came up behind me and wrapped his long arms around the both of us. We all laughed as we broke apart.
“Oh, I’m sorry, did I forget you Cameron?” Amy asked.
He laughed. “Easy to do with all these people here!”
It wasn’t until then that I actually noticed how many people had been jammed into her huge house. I mean, her house was big, but there must have been at least a hundred people in her living room alone!
“Whoa, Ames! Someone is popular!” I said in obvious awe.
“Not me! This is just some random person’s party that I crashed...”
Amy started looking around her at all the people and I laughed as I noticed that Cameron was actually looking confused.
“That was a joke.” Amy explained.
“Oh.” he said sheepishly.
I really cracked up at that one before giving him a quick peck on the cheek. He could be such an idiot sometimes, but I still loved him!
“You are one truly strange kid. Rachel, you really need to teach him our humour.”
I saluted her. “Yes mam!”
“I have to go and mingle, I’ll talk to you guys later! Have fun! Both of you!”

Immediately as Amy left, I excused myself to go to the bathroom. As soon as I got there, I kicked the intimate couple out of the shower before closing and locking the door. I sat on the toilet and started rummaging through my handbag. Where were they? I knew I had packed them! Where were they? Served me right for bringing my big handbag, I could never find anything in it! It was then that I spotted them! That packet of small tablets guaranteed to ensure a fun night. Normally I would only take one, but this was an important night. I needed to make it as special as possible for Amy. I didn’t want her birthday to be as crappy as mine had been.

When I placed those three small, round tablets in my mouth, I felt everything disappear. Everything that had ever gone wrong in my life departed. All of my struggles vanished. All of my problems were gone. Were they ever really problems to begin with? I didn’t care! I felt so good! Everything was wonderful! Everything was perfect! Nothing could possibly make this moment any better than it is now. I sat back for a minute to enjoy the feeling of sheer ecstasy before getting to my feet and rejoining the party.

There were so many things that I hadn’t seen before! There was so much to take in! I was looking in every single direction at once! That guy had a red shirt on! That girl had purple hair! Everything felt so good! The music was so loud! It was so loud! I could feel the beat pumping through my veins. I wanted to dance! I dropped my handbag on the ground and ran to the dance floor. The lights were such beautiful colours! They were flashing everywhere! It was so hot! I could feel sweat dripping off my body, but I didn’t care! Everything just felt so good! I started dancing my heart out to the beat running through my veins.

It was then that Cameron rushed up to me and attempted to pull me off the floor.
“Rachel, come on! You don’t look well. Let’s go sit down.”
He was so cute when he was trying to get me to sit down!
“Cameron! I love you Cameron! Do you know that? I love you!” I yelled it out so that everyone could hear me.
“And I love you. Now come with me and rest for a bit!”
“Come on, Cameron! Let’s dance! I want to dance!”
“Rachel, come sit down!” he insisted.
“Dance with me!” I replied stubbornly.
He just stood there so I started dancing around him. I started sliding up and down his body. I would get him to dance with me sooner or later. I danced and I danced. It all felt so good! And then, suddenly everything went numb. I saw myself fall to the ground but I could feel nothing.

“SOMEONE HELP ME! PLEASE! SOMEONE CALL AN AMBULANCE!”
I could hear Cameron yelling but he felt so distant. Everything felt so distant. Everything was numb. It was so numb. It was then that I felt a fire rip and tear through my body. My body was on fire! I was burning! Why was no one putting the fire out?

“She is burning up! She is so hot!”
“How is her pulse?” I heard someone ask.
I could barely feel the pressure that Cameron must have put on my neck to check it.
“It is fast! It is going so fast! Rachel! Rachel, can you hear me?” Cameron’s voice was full of desperation.
“I’m on fire, Cameron! I’m on fire.” I replied weakly.
“I know. I know. Just hang in there! I need you to tell me what you had.”
I did not say anything. I did not want him to know as I knew he would not like what he heard.
“Rachel, I need to know what you had.” he insisted as he put his cool hand on my head.
“Three.” I surrendered.
My body curled into a ball as I felt a strange substance begin to foam in my mouth.
“HOLY CRAP! What is that?” I felt very embarrassed as one of the crowd noticed.
Cameron ignored them. “Rach, I need to induce some vomit.”
I did not care about anything at the moment. Everything was so sore. Everything was on fire. My mouth opened and I guessed that he had put his fingers down my throat. I could feel nothing but the pain.
“It’s not working!” I heard him call out.
“Here try using this!” someone must have handed something to him.
My mouth opened again and I felt a very painful jolt in my stomach which told me that he had succeeded in making me vomit all over my new outfit. The fire didn’t go anywhere.

“I love you, Cameron.” I whispered.
“I love you, too.” he whispered before kissing my cheek. I could feel his cool, mildly refreshing tears fall on my face.
Using all of the energy I had left in my body, I lifted my arm up to touch his face.
“I love you so much.”
I let my head fall back in Cameron’s strong grip and I felt the fire leave my body. Everything went numb.
