Facing Adversity

Searing scorching flames erupted from my flaming hands as I awoke from the heart-stopping nightmare. ‘Oh no,’ I thought dreadingly, ‘not again!’
My name is Rein, I have been hiding my elemental powers from the government ever since I received them at the age of 10; I am now 15. Looking sadly at the place I have called home merely one merry week, I knew I would have to move again. My bed was reduced to a flaming pile of ash and the things closest to me existed no longer. The flaming apartment groaned like a grandpa on his last legs, and the window was singing with the wind blowing in through the now door less door way.
Suddenly, urgent, stomping footsteps sounded from the fire stair well. I couldn’t let the firemen see me, for they were government men.
‘Rein!’ shrieked an unknown, urgent voice, ‘Rein hurry! The window Rein!’ the footsteps were coming closer; I took my chances and leaped to the window surrounded by a halo of flaming curtains. With one last regretful look over my shoulder, I erupted through the window as a ball of fire and smoke and landed in the awaiting arms made of- ice?
Chshhh! Steam bellowed from the contact of fire on ice (or ice on fire, which ever takes your fancy...) and immediately we separated, for ice and fire cannot exist together. Staring at my mysterious rescuer, I saw a girl, the same age as me with pale- ice like skin and crystallised white hair with blue stormy ocean-like eyes and her arms turned from pale skin to icicle clear as my eyes travelled down them. We looked each other in the eye and instantaneously reached a decision. Run!
As of now, the enemy of thine enemy is thy friend, and so, together we formed an instant alliance and fled the scene that would lead to our discovery.
Two hours later, panting hard and worn from fleeing, we stumbled upon a merciful refuge- the abandoned dog shelter. There we devised a plan to escape the country.
Presently, we dressed as pilgrims in hoods to follow the path of the great ‘le poul’ (the “mother hen” that many in this country follow), the path leads to the end of the country where we would catch a boar to Bedgerrabong- land of the free- and the hoods would geniously conceal our elemental powers. My new ally and element of water is Belle and she has been following me for a while, intrigued that there are more like her. With our heads low, we began our journey only to be pulled short by the heart wrenching sight of a small homeless boy shivering in the cold. We didn’t have enough time to stop and help him, and so I sent him a wave of heat to warm his hands while Belle melted the icicles on the end of his nose, hoping no one saw. We returned to our path only to be interrupted yet again by a persistent “pst!” coming from a dark alley way... Cautiously, but curiously we peered down it only to see a small golden haired girl in a great blue cape with none other than my best friend since kinder, Ebony, with her dark hair and big brown eyes.
‘Rein! Thank goodness we found you!’ Ebony whispered, ‘I always suspected you were the fire element ever since you left. This is Se-se; she is the air element, and I’m the Earth element!’ After a short catch up, we learnt that we were the four elements from prophesy who were sent to save our country from the fall brought by false leadership. Realising that this is our fight to fight, we turned from our easy way out, for you can never run from your adversity, you have to face it and overcome it.
Together, we removed our disguises and turned to fight for our country.
Although, one question continued to burn in my mind:
“Why are all the elements girls?” I asked Ebony.
“Girls are better at everything and in every aspect than boys. Naturally” she stated simply.
“Naturally” I agreed.
