A Fine Breeder

I came here today ambitious to buy
A premium quality male to breed,
But that’s not what caught my critical eye;
It was a female in fine form indeed.
I examined her teeth and eyes and ears,
Then spun her around to look at her flanks.
Like a blemish-free lamb, so young in years;
A bargain at six hundred, I’ll take her thanks.
I led her away by collar and leash,
Thinking of the fine litters she’d raise.
Her offspring would fetch at least eight hundred each,
I shall profit much by selling her babes.
A darn good breeder this negro will be,
Right after this black pearl satisfies me.
