3rd in the 'Calling All Poets 2007' competition
I came upon a barren shore one day:
A stark and rugged testament of stone
Whose razor ridges probed the skies of may
And framed that yard of fleshless earthen bone.
Beneath those merciless, desperate granite knives
I wandered, seeking shelter from the sea
Where other men before have spent their lives
In solemn, silent, bitter purgatory.
Yet once, I stumbled by a glassy pool
Whose placid surface, crystal clear and cool
Drew the eye to probe that realm below
Where sacred things have swum and hopes have grown
And though I stray, my heart shall take its fill
From in that pool, calm, and absolutely still.
