Emotionless night surveys the woman with its merciless, cold gaze,
While desperately in an ocean of darkness and misery she flays.
She watches her dreams mockingly flit back and forth,
She shivers, her mind blindly gropes, seeking warmth.
Tentatively, hungrily she watches as her dreams frolic and smile,
But between them lie thousands upon thousands of miles.
Luxuriously, they stretch their wings in the night’s light,
Spellbound, she watches one delicately pirouette mid-flight.
In the distance one twirls, and alluringly beckons her way,
Longingly she looks; wishing, but has no strength as it may.
The icy night wind breathes upon her fevered brow and whimpering cheek,
It mocks and taunts her chiding, “Come now, don’t be weak.”
She surveys the weights that firmly anchor her to the ground,
Ensuring she is never lost, but nor can ever be found.
And just as infinite night, across the eternal expanse of sky sweeps,
Within her, vast emptiness stretches as she falls and weeps.
