Unlocked Door

How can you smile when you know that I am dying?

When all the light is gone and my dreams slowly turning,

And the cold, vivid nightmares become reality.

Where screaming will only enhance the pain and

All their helping hands are giving you hope,

Before condeming you to the dark depths of time.

How can you say it will be okay, when all I feel is crying,

Tears of children and wails of winds.

Hearts beating as one, lungs gasping for breath.

Hands interwined and we stare down the beast itself,

We do not cry, we do not move.

Silence screams and fear stains the pages,

We cannot cry, we cannot move.

It is beyond our reach, the glimmer of false hope,

The stream of sunlight under a locked door.

We stand tall and face the fears of a new beginning,

I feel your heart beating as fast as mine.

Why then do you feel so strong?

When all I can feel is the pain of the mind,

You seem to be focused on the fight.

The fight for survival that pumps in my veins,

The stars casting shadows around darkened corners.

It is only then when I realise what you must have known all along,

All these fears are in my mind.

Why am I scared to turn down an unknown corner?

Is it because of what awaits me on the other side,

Or what I believe will await me?

There is nothing worse than the pain of losing you,

So why then am I frightened after you assure me that there is nothing I could do,

Nothing that would tear us apart from the very depths of our hearts.

Your gaze is focused ahead,

As if waiting for a time I dread.

You smile a little and I gasp in thought,

I hear you thoughts echo my mind.

A beautiful moon throws light around the room,

It glitters everywhere and a young girl sits in the shadows.

As if she is oblivious to this amazing world, she sits and she cries.

He tries to reach her but she is blind,

He tries to speak but she is deaf.

So he sits and he waits for her to move.

I shudder and realise that she is me,

And the only thing I need to do is take that step.

So with this enlightened thought,

And with your hand firmly in mine.

Your smile of hope and the gaze that holds time.

I reach down and pull out the key,

Walk those few steps across falling ground,

Place it in the lock and I have found,

The life that was made for us that I wanted evermore.

Lays just outside this unlocked door.
