Unsung Heroes

In nineteen one four
The year of the First World War
Families lost their loved ones
Their father and their sons
Yet not only men dedicated their lives
To the horror of the guns and knives
The women stood tall
As qualified nurses they were all
Wherever the men went they always followed
Their hearts singing, never to be hollowed
Yet through their service bold
It was quietly told
That twenty five never returned
To their loved ones, forever burned
The unsung heroes of a time with no sun
Were the heroic nurses of World War One.
