These days are long and hard – endless …
I swear I’m seeing things,
Black shadows dance across my eyes.
They move like ghosts through the jungle,
The warm rain falls and dampens the shiver running up my spine.
I’m always hot, wet and I feel like giving up, but we need to stick together,
The mozzies, mud, constant rain and disease,
Are my enemies while I fight the Japs,
We coat our barrels in mud to remain unseen, but they keep jamming,
The voices of my fallen mates still call to me for help.
Home is a long, long way away.
