Lest We Forget
The blood covered poppies rustling in the breeze,
You can’t fail to appease.
Bodies in the trenches lay askew,
Settling into the morning mildew.
Bullet shots, gunshots, zeppelins,
Would he be able to drink another bottle of gin?
Dying on the beach; death within reach,
Never again would they listen to the minister preach.
The women at home, praying for their return,
The soldiers, not wanting for their family to concern.
Heartaches, headaches, pain.
Remember where they had lain.
They fought for our country through misery and sorrow,
They would never again see another rainbow,
For they breathed in their last breath,
Lest we forget.
