A HEN'S DAY

Chickens in the morning sun:
In the long grass, having fun.
Night is over, now they're running,
Chasing moths, now stretching, sunning.
In the nut-leaves, so crisp and brown-
Scritchy-scratching, round and round.
Disturb the leaves, the insects scatter,
Chickens chase them, beaks a-clatter!
Mid-morning comes, and time to find
A warm straw nest - a place to hide.
For eggs will soon be on the way
As chicken cackles fill the day!
Evening comes, so back to roost,
The work of hens now finally done.
Feathers preened, the hens file in
And murmur gentle songs to the setting sun.
