Stand at the top of the bridge, at the crest of the wave
And wonder what the purpose behind the purpose really is.
Cars and trucks crash to a stop while the ambos go by, to save
Some person they don’t know in a place they don’t recognise.
Is it just better to not ask questions?
But then there is the underlying suggestion
That we are the remnants of a long-lost civilisation
All that remains of an elder generation.
If so, do we have a legacy to keep?
If so, why do the stone angels weep?
If so, why do soldiers struggle to sleep?
If so, why do the long shadows creep?
Stand at the edge of time, at the far reaches of the sky
And wonder what the reason behind the reason really is.
Dying stars wink out of existence without so much as a sigh
But we scream when we’re brought into this world.
