100 years ago, close to Italy,
the ANZACs set out, to gain Gallipoli.
At dawn they landed at the wrong beach, facing the steep slopes,
the brave ANZACs held onto their precious hopes.
Private Simpson helped the troops, with his good mate Duffy the donkey,
together they rescued the injured ANZACs and took them back to safety.
Courage, bravery and sacrifice are some of the main aspects of the ANZAC spirit,
others include determination, endurance and mateship.
These values were so strongly demonstrated and have defined Australia as a nation,
despite the Gallipoli defeat and devastation.
A bugle was used to play the Last Post, this indicated the end of the day,
I bet the soldiers thought ‘Hip hip hooray’.
We remember the fallen at the Dawn Services,
as the Last Post reminds us of their sacrifices.
