The Deluge

Finalist in the 'Word Zone 2016' competition

Starting light like mist, floating down from the sky,
As if the raindrops were falling shy,
The fresh soil releasing delicate smells into the air,
The rain singing; playing every note with care,
The water drizzling down off bright green leaves,
Crowding up the gutters of buildings’ eaves,
Rain growing heavier, causing ripples in the water,
Soon the sky is grey and dense; guilty of the sun’s slaughter,
Rain thundering down like splintering tears of fear,
Drowning out the world until the storm decides to clear.
