Amber saw a little girl sitting by herself at a playground.
She sat down next to her. Six noisy coins fell from her pocket.
The little girl was quiet.
Amber picked them up and said, “they’re coins, I’m going to buy an ice cream with my mother”.
The little girl turned toward Amber, but said nothing. She was blind.
Amber gently held out a 20c piece to her.
“We read with our fingers”, said the girl, touching the coin gently. She could feel the outline of the platypus on the coin.
“The platypus is an Australian animal”, said Amber.
The little girl smiled. She had found a friend.
Amber held out another coin to her, a 5c piece.
“Echidnas have long tongues!” said Amber.
Their mothers bought them ice creams, and they smiled at each other when they saw their daughters sitting together.
“I’m an echidna!” said Amber happily, licking her ice cream.
Her little friend giggled.
It was an echidna kind of day!
