A Deathly Debacle

It was the year 1915,
The soldiers out at bay.
Their sorrow hearts remind them of those happy summer days.
For once upon a bright blue evening in a safe and warm abode,
Their families would greet them soon, that's if they made it home.

When time had come to set afoot and go right on ahead,
You'd realise once you took the leap, it's better if you're dead.
The sultry heat beating down like fire, the cussing as you thus perspire.
A loud explosion in the distance,
You keep your trudge, you'll need persistence.

The bloody battle although attempted,
Soon came it its demise.
For the Turks had won,
And the campaign done,
A lucky man survives.
