Darkness Arisen

It’s truly magical, I thought sipping a nice cup of coffee. There it was, the sun beginning to rise into a new day. The bright orange rays glistened against the snow causing a spectacular array of orange here and there. I could sense the snow crystals on my nose melting into small droplets of water running down my cheeks. The smell of pancakes filled my nose with a slight hint of sweet blueberry. “ Harriet darling, come in, it’s cold out there and mum made you some nice fresh pancakes.” I took in one more breath of fresh cold air and headed to the wafting smell of pancakes. After a hot meal of buttery blueberry pancakes, I lay down, eyes droopy. I woke to the sound of banging in the distance, it worked it’s way into my dream but I fought back lifting my heavy eyes. It was now dark, light was no longer seeping through the blinds. Questions ran through my mind like an overflowing soft serve machine. Wheres mum?, Why is it so dark?, Who is doing the banging? I stood up ready to investigate, I turned the corner into the kitchen and grabbed a nearby baseball bat. Bat ready I slowly shimmied towards the front door. About 2 metres in front of the door the banging stopped ever so suddenly. It was like they knew I was close. A shiver ran down my spine as I crouched towards the blinds to peak through, a mix of horror and shock hit me like a rock solid wall. Standing on my front porch there was a figure it was too dark to make out any facial features but I knew for one thing whatever it was, it was watching me. I stumbled backwards and sloppily ran towards my room. “Mum!” I screamed, no reply. I ran up to the stairs and all the way to my room but I. Was cut short. There it was again the figure this time next to my bedroom window watching me like a hawk. I screamed, a high pitched blood curling scream, just as I woke up in a pool of sweat. Just a nightmare, I told myself, just a nightmare. I breathed a sigh of relief just as the front door began banging.
